In Rites of Election, Hawaii’s parishes and Catholic communities to welcome those to be baptized at Easter

By Patrick Downes
Hawaii Catholic Herald

The coronavirus pandemic has altered another Lenten practice, the Rite of Election. That is the event at which catechumens, also called the elect, make public their intention to receive in their parishes at the Easter Vigil the three sacraments of initiation — baptism, confirmation and first Eucharist — by signing their names in their parish’s Book of the Elect.

On Maui, Molokai and the Big Island, instead of the customary single event per vicariate, the rite will be held at each parish on Feb. 21, the first Sunday in Lent. Lanai has no catechumens this year.

Kauai will have a single Rite of Election during the 5 p.m. Saturday vigil Mass Feb. 20 at St. Catherine Church in Kapaa. Oahu will have two on Feb. 21, the first at noon at the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Peace, the other at 6 p.m. at the Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa. Oahu usually has one. Bishop Larry Silva will preside at the Kauai and Oahu ceremonies.

Hawaii has a total of 150 catechumens, according to the diocesan Office of Worship. Last year, the office recorded 189 catechumens and 196 in 2019.

In addition to Hawaii’s 66 parishes, the diocese counts catechumens in three ethnic communities and four military base chapels. Thirty-four parishes and Catholic communities reported no catechumens this year.

The parish reporting the most catechumens is St. Joseph, Waipahu, with 14. St. John Apostle and Evangelist in Mililani with 13 had the second-largest number.

In a Jan. 6 memo to pastors and RCIA coordinators, Deacon Modesto Cordero, director of the Office of Worship, explained that it was because of the pandemic that the bishop decided to delegate each pastor or parochial vicar to conduct the Rite of Election.

According to Deacon Cordero, the Rite of Election is celebrated as part of the Liturgy of the Word at Sunday Mass. After the rite, the elect are dismissed before the recitation of the creed to further reflect on the Scripture readings.

The Rite of Election does not include those who will be received into “full communion” in the Catholic Church. Those are persons who are already baptized and are preparing to receive the one or two remaining sacraments of initiation. This is preferably done at a time other than the Easter Vigil.

The diocesan Office of Worship invites candidates for full communion to attend the Rite of Election “as part of the baptized assembly and to support those preparing for baptism.”
