The Diocese of Honolulu will see 200 catechumens baptized in parishes across Hawaii this Easter Vigil, April 16, 51 more than last year.

The catechumens 7 and older, also called the elect, will make public their intention to receive the three sacraments of initiation — Baptism, Confirmation and first Eucharist — in Rites of Election during the first weekend in Lent, March 5 and 6.

At the rites, the future Catholics will sign their names in their parish’s Book of the Elect.

The diocese has counted approximately 200 catechumens a year over the past decade, with the exception of last year when the number dipped to 149, most likely because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The names listed on this page are collected by the diocesan Office of Worship.

The Rites of Election will be celebrated at the following times and locations:

Maui vicariate: Saturday, March 5, 5 p.m. at St. Anthony Church, Wailuku. Bishop Larry Silva will celebrate the Mass.

Kauai vicariate: Sunday, March 6, 4:30 p.m. at Immaculate Conception Church, Lihue. The Mass will be celebrated by Kauai’s vicar forane, La Salette Father Edison Pamintuan.

Oahu vicariates: Sunday, March 6, 1 p.m. at the Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa, Honolulu. Bishop Silva will celebrate the Liturgy of the Word.

For parishes on the Big Island, Lanai and Molokai, Bishop Silva has delegated each pastor or parochial vicar to preside over the Rite of Election in his own parish on the weekend of the First Sunday of Lent.

The Hawaii parish reporting the most catechumens was St. Theresa, Mountain View, on Hawaii island with 22, most belonging to two families. St. Joseph, Hilo, with 14, had the second-largest number.

In addition to Hawaii’s 66 parishes, the diocese counts catechumens in three ethnic communities and four military base chapels. Twenty-one parishes and two military bases reported no catechumens. A third base did not respond to a request for names.

The Rite of Election does not include those who will be received into “full communion” in the Catholic Church. Those are persons who are already baptized and are preparing to receive the one or two remaining sacraments of initiation. This is preferably done at a time other than the Easter Vigil.
