Priests are on the move as new assignments take effect July 1

Hawaii Catholic Herald

The word has been out since April, and parishes have been bidding farewell and laying out welcome mats.

Pastors and parochial vicars will be on the move next month, from Kauai to Oahu to Maui. The changes are effective July 1 unless otherwise noted.

In most situations, clergy are moving from one parish to another. There are two exceptions:

  • Father Alfred Omar B. Guerrero is leaving his role as pastor of the Newman Center/Holy Spirit Parish at the University of Hawaii at Manoa to become the Diocese of Honolulu’s director of vocations. He will continue to serve as director of the diocesan Office of Worship.
  • Father Edgar Brillantes, pastor of Our Lady of the Mount Church in Kalihi, went on sabbatical June 1 and will return to the same role once he completes his sabbatical in a couple months.

Father Khanh Hoang, priest-secretary for Bishop Larry Silva, and newly ordained Father Preston Castro are among the clergy who are filling in while Father Brillantes is away.

In July, Father Nicholas Apetorgbor will become Our Lady of the Mount’s temporary administrator. He has been serving as administrator of St. Catherine Church in Kapaa, Kauai.

Father EJ Resinto will become pastor of St. Catherine Church. He has been serving as pastor of Sacred Heart Church in Punahou and pastor for Maryknoll School.

Sacred Heart Church will be overseen by Father Ese’ese “Ace” Tui, who will become pastor there after serving as parochial vicar of St. Anthony Church in Wailuku, Maui.

The diocese’s other newly ordained priest, Father Lawrence “Larry” Denis III, will become parochial vicar of St. Anthony Church — his first official assignment in the diocese.

Back at UH-Manoa, Father Guerrero’s place at the Newman Center/Holy Spirit Parish will be filled by Father Kurt Meyer, who has been serving as parochial vicar at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Ewa Beach.

Father Castro will take Father Meyer’s place at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in his first official assignment in the diocese.

Finally, there have been a couple leadership changes at St. Rita Church in Haiku, Maui, since April.

Missionaries of Faith Father Robert Ni Ni has returned to Myanmar after a devastating earthquake struck his home country in March.

Taking Father Ni Ni’s place as temporary administrator was Missionaries of Faith Father Raju Paletti, who will serve in the role until June 30.

On July 1, Missionaries of Faith Father Poulouse Kannampilly Chakkapann will become pastor of St. Rita.
