Clik here to view.Bishop Larry Silva privately held the “Celebration of the Passion of the Lord” on Good Friday afternoon, April 10, at the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Peace in Honolulu due to the COVID-19 virus pandemic.
A small number of clergy and lay ministers were in attendance, and the Mass was broadcast live at hictv.com and on the cathedral’s Facebook page for the many who could not be present. Both recordings were available for later viewing, and an Order of Worship was posted online.
In his homily, Bishop Silva told the story of a friend who had turned his life around after directing his anger at God.
“I know many people are angry at me and other bishops for suspending these public services,” Bishop Silva said in regards to all public Holy Week Masses and services being halted in Hawaii due to COVID-19 safety precautions against large public gatherings.
The bishop told people they can turn their frustrations and anger, during this time and always, over to Jesus because he will hold it all and still love them.
“Take your anger to the cross,” Bishop Silva said.
The bishop was accompanied by a small number of priests, deacons, altar servers and other ministers for this Good Friday service, which included the reading of the Passion of Christ, veneration of the cross and communion. It was not a Mass, however, as no Masses are held between the end of Holy Thursday and sundown on Holy Saturday.
At its peak, 896 people watched the hictv.com livestream of the “Celebration of the Passion of the Lord.” Another 266 were recorded during peak live viewing of the Facebook broadcast.
As he did at the previous night’s Holy Thursday Mass, Bishop Silva read the Diocese of Honolulu’s Prayer for the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic aloud at the end of the celebration.
Then the small number of ministers all bowed before the cross and departed the altar.
Here are some screenshots from the livestream.
